About us

Neil A. Colmer learned to weave in the labor program at Berea College while he was a student When he graduated in 1972, with a degree in Spanish he had won the Sara Fuller Prize Loom (This was a special award presented to a worthy Berea College weaving student).

Upon Graduation, he went to work for Berea College Fireside Industries as an employed weaver, leaving Berea College to work for Fort Boonesboro State Park in order to help set up the Fort's Craft program. He was given The Kentucky Award for his part in promoting Kentucky to the world public in 1977.

It is impossible to calculate how many miles of cloth he as made so far, but he has been a serious weaver now for 32 years and plans to keep weaving for many years to come. He has woven cloth from many fibers including cotton, wool, linen and even Mylar threads, perfering the cotton for it's washability. He has his work in many countries of the world because folks buy things in his shop and take them home with them. He has a shawl in Katmandu and a baby blanket in Moscow. The largest weaving orders so far were the ones for 205 Prayer Shawls for a Hindu Ashram in upper New York State, and 24 King size bedspreads for Boone Tavern here in Berea.

His favorite styles of weaving are the colonial overshot patterns, Atwater Bronson Lace and double woven cloth.

Just recently Neil has been doing some Kuihimo weaving on a Marudi, and leather chair bottoms for Doug Haley's fine woodwork here in Old Town Berea.

Neil enjoys doing custom orders as long as there is no deadline for the finished product. Weaving is a long slow process at times, and requires a lot of patience. Orders are filled on a 'first come first served' basis.

The following images show some of the different patterns availible. Neil weaves just about every type of cloth imagineable, for just about any use, so don't hesitate to ask! In fact he specializes in recreating existing patterns.
